"If we are to move from a culture of war to a culture of peace then we will have to unite around the most fundamental issue that humanity faces – the protection of each other and our environment. 21st September is the starting point. Individuals can make a difference. By working together there will be Peace One Day."

The Vermont Yoga Festival in Montpelier Vermont includes 3 days of classes, demonstrations and unifying community events from September 18-20, 2009.  The Festival is planned in collaboration with National Yoga Month and the U.N. Day of Peace and is a benefit for local youth at risk. The Vermont Yoga Festival plans to be a zero waste event. This means eliminating the generation of excess waste during the event and reusing, recycling and composting wherever possible. This will require the cooperation of everyone involved (exhibitors, participants, sponsors and of course us, the event coordinators)

The Vermont Yoga Festival envisions people of all ages and from all levels of fitness and health to benefit from our goal to educate, inspire and build awareness of the positive impacts of yoga on physical and mental health.  At a time when everyone-regardless of gender age, geography or socioeconomic level-is looking for proactive ways to manage their own health; yoga provides a real viable, scientifically proven method to do so.

The Vermont Yoga Festival provides a forum for all participants to learn how take an active role in their own well being by focusing on preventative health care and healthy lifestyle choices. Besides yoga, the festival offers information on nutrition, local options for food and alternative health care, as well as options for managing stress.  Learning these values will give individuals a tool for addressing the current health care crisis.  Yoga in Vermont is readily available in local communities, and is also a medium for uniting people from diverse backgrounds.  By encouraging students to take a proactive role in addressing their personal health, yoga students can reduce the cost of their medical care.

The Vermont Yoga Festival is planned in the vibrant downtown of Vermont’s capitol city.  Montpelier provides seven local studios where students can practice yoga and related healing arts. The festival also provides the unique opportunity for these diverse studios to unite around the common goals of unity, environmental stewardship, service and education.  The festival venues are all accessible by foot or bicycle and we encourage participants to leave their cars parked for the weekend.  A beneficial weekend for Montpelier’s local merchants is one of the Vermont Yoga Festival goals.

The final component of the Vermont Yoga Festival is community service.  In accordance with the ancient custom of "seva"  (Sanskrit for service) yoga festival students can chose from a variety of projects throughout the weekend.  Service projects include free classes for the disabled, elderly and disadvantaged.  The Vermont Yoga Festival has also set the goal of distributing 500 tree seedlings, and plans to plant a percentage of them in Montpelier over the weekend.  All proceeds from the Festival will benefit children at risk, through a local 501(c)3 called the Magic House.
